Around the New York City Location
Toy Soldier Greeting
Every trip to FAO Schwarz begins with a warm greeting from the store’s real-life Toy Soldiers, an integral part of the iconic brand. Toy Soldiers are always willing to pose for a photo, while ushering crowds of eager customers into the world famous toy store. From there, the journey into a child’s quintessential wonderland begins.
Upon entering the Grand Hall, visitors are welcomed by exquisite FAO Schwarz-branded merchandise, including the ever popular Patrick and Penelope the Pup, a take-home version of the BIG Piano and New York-themed souvenirs to commemorate visits to the store and the Big Apple.
Kids and kids at heart from around the world flock to FAO Schwarz to relive an iconic scene from the movie BIG on this oversized Piano. Visitors are encouraged to kick off their shoes and dance on the piano's humongous keys to create a musical masterpiece. Visitors to the BIG Piano can also get their picture taken before taking center stage (prices vary).
An iconic stop at the legendary store for 15 years, FAO Schweetz has been completely redesigned and now encompasses more than 4,000 square feet on Level One. Featuring new floors, new displays and, most importantly, a fantastic assortment of tasty treats, FAO Schweetz will "wow" shoppers in search of a sweet snack. Offering its signature candy by the pound, visitors will enjoy browsing dozens of delicious candies sure to satisfy any sweet tooth, from bears, worms, fruit and anything else gummy, to classic candies such as Jawbreakers, Whoppers, WONKA and more!
Muppet™ What-Not Workshop
An experience unlike any other and super fun to boot! At the Muppet™ What-Not Workshop, customers have the ability to create their very own Muppet puppet or monster. The process begins by choosing from a selection of bodies and facial features, then hair pieces and finally dressing the Muppets in one of many fun, classic and fanciful outfits. Shoppers can create their Muppet look-a-like, or just a fantasy friend!
“Welcome to Our World”: A Familiar, Friendly Face Returns
As visitors travel to the Concourse Level, they are greeted by the famous face of the FAO Schwarz Clock Tower, originally displayed in the store from 1986 through 2004. Now positioned above the escalator leading down to the Baby Department, the friendly face once again plays the classic theme song, "Welcome to Our World of Toys," the signature tune that greeted customers for 18 years.
The world's oldest and best-known European designer of stuffed animals has an impressive catalogue of new and collectible plush, including wild animals (both towering and tiny), traditional Teddy Bears, classic cartoon and children’s book characters, American Kennel Club dogs and more. The redesigned Steiff boutique at FAO Schwarz features old-time photos of members of the Steiff family with some of their classic creations. FAO Schwarz celebrates a long history with Steiff. In fact, the first store to sell Steiff Teddy Bears in the U.S. was none other than FAO Schwarz in 1902.
Make-believe mommies can experience the thrill of adopting a newborn with these life-like dolls. Designed to look and feel like real infants, ''parents''-to-be can choose the eye and hair color for their ''baby.'' To make the experience complete, each doll comes with adoption papers and new ''parents'' receive their ''babies'' from an FAO Schwarz staff nurse.
