History of the AFL: The American Football League (AFL) was a major professional league that operated from 1960-1969, until it merged with the National Football League (NFL). By the year 1968, it consisted of 10 teams. During the AFL's final two years, the AFL teams won two upset victories over the NFL teams in Superbowl III and IV. During the merger in 1970, all 10 AFL teams became a part of the new league's American Football Conference (AFC).

50th Anniversary Season: The AFL's 50th anniversary will be celebrated during this upcoming 2009 NFL season. During the regular season, each of the "original eight" AFL teams will take part in two "Legacy Weekends" where each will play another original eight teams and both teams will wear AFL throwback uniforms.
